Palliative Care

When serious illness strikes, life can change in an instant. Palliative care is about support for you in these moments—emotionally, physically, mindfully—helping you to live life more comfortably.

What is Palliative Care?

ProgramsOfCare-Palliative

Palliative care is similar to hospice care in that the same principles of pain management and symptom control are applied. Hospice Care of the Lowcountry is uniquely licensed to provide palliative — or comfort — care to those with a terminal illness, even while they are still seeking curative treatment for their condition. We are the only hospice in the Lowcountry that is licensed to offer this service.
Palliative care strives to provide:

  • Expert treatment of pain and other symptoms so the patient can improve quality of life
  • Coordinated communication with doctors and family members throughout the illness
  • A chance to live life more comfortably
  • Help in addressing patient’s changing needs and goals
  • Emotional support for the patient and their family

Like hospice care, palliative care is provided in the patient’s home and includes the same team of professionals.

When is Palliative Care Appropriate?

Palliative care is appropriate when symptoms require closer monitoring than a family caregiver might be able to provide, or when pain needs to be better controlled. Patients on our Palliative Home Health Care program are continually monitored and assessed so that all the best treatment options are explored.

Very often, an individual in palliative care does get better – possibly because of lessened stress, our attentive care and generally improved quality of life. However, should a person in our Palliative Home Health Care program determine that further curative treatment is no longer desired, the transition to hospice care is smooth and seamless, providing further benefit to the patient and family.

Does Palliative Care Work With my Doctors?

Absolutely, in fact, many patients receive palliative care alongside curative treatment. The palliative care team works in partnership with your own doctor to provide expert pain management, relief, and support for you and your family.

What Costs are Involved in Palliative Care?

Palliative Care of the Lowcountry will never charge for its services.

If you have questions regarding palliative care for yourself or a loved one, please contact us today at 843.706.2296 so we may answer your questions and discuss whether palliative care might be a good option for your situation.
