It is difficult to consider that sometimes children and teens are diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses and that, in such cases, these young people and their families can benefit from hospice services.

The reality, however, is that Hospice Care of the Lowcountry is qualified, available and ready to serve even the youngest of patients.

Not all hospices accept children as patients. Caring for a sick child or teen can be very costly, emotionally draining and time-consuming.

But we embrace our children with a special kind of care and compassion that involves close monitoring and attention to pain symptoms.

Parents, siblings and other family members - in addition to the primary physician - are an integral part of the care plan. Our chaplain, social workers, bereavement counselors and volunteers work with the nursing team to provide additional support and comfort.

Hospice Care of the Lowcountry is proud to be the hospice of choice for Backus Children's Hospital in Savannah, Ga., and for the Medical University of South Carolina's Children's Hospital in Charleston, S.C., for their young patients who are residents of Beaufort and Jasper counties.

Children and teens typically experience grief differently from adults too. To provide support for those special issues, we offer bereavement counseling specially geared to younger individuals. Please see our
Grief and Loss page for information on support programs and our Camp TLC Bereavement Day Camp.
